Education

The Cowboy Trades Association is committed to preserving and promoting the artisan traditions of the American West through a wide range of educational opportunities. From hands-on workshops and mentorship programs to accredited curriculum-based learning, our mission is to connect aspiring artisans with master craftsmen and keep these vital skills alive for future generations.

Partnering with organizations like the Rocky Mountain Folk School, as well as schools, colleges, and artisan studios across the region, we aim to provide accessible learning experiences for all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re looking to explore the basics or pursue mastery in cowboy arts, our programs foster collaboration, creativity, and a deep appreciation for this rich cultural heritage.

Educational Opportunities:

Our journey began with a successful one-day Introduction to Handmade Western Boots workshop at the Rocky Mountain Folk School on June 29, 2024 — A small but exciting first step in showcasing the artistry of cowboy traditions.

We’re now working diligently to create more advanced workshops, educational programs, and mentorship opportunities, connecting participants with master artisans to preserve and celebrate these time-honored skills. Sign up for our newsletter or check back regularly to stay informed about upcoming opportunities and updates!

“If we don’t share our knowledge and skills with the next generation, the traditional cowboy trades that define our heritage will fade into history.“

Rocky Mountain Folk School

Rocky Mountain Folk School will host a series of summer leatherworking workshops led by master craftsman and educator Matt Paisley, whose steady, hands-on approach reflects years of teaching and practical trade experience. Drawing on time-honored methods and trail-tested design, Matt guides students through the kind of careful, purposeful workmanship that has long defined Western craft. Offered only during the summer months, these limited sessions provide a rare opportunity to learn directly from a seasoned maker in a small, focused setting. Participants may choose between a one-day custom sandal-making class or a two-day leather messenger bag workshop, with all tools, materials, and step-by-step instruction provided so each student leaves with a finished, durable piece made by their own hands.

Whether you are new to the trade or looking to strengthen your skills, these workshops emphasize fit, function, and lasting quality—the hallmarks of good leatherwork. Space is limited, and early registration is encouraged. For those who need assistance, Rocky Mountain Folk School offers scholarship support to help make these classes accessible; applicants may learn more and apply at https://rockymountainfolkschool.org/scholarships/.
